The Qualigens O-Tolidine reagent is a solution used to qualitatively and quantitatively estimate the presence of free chlorine in water, forming a yellow color upon reaction with active chlorine in potable, swimming pool, and condenser water. The reagent, typically a solution of o-tolidine in hydrochloric acid, reacts to produce a color intensity directly proportional to the chlorine concentration, which can be observed by visual comparison. The test is sensitive and commonly found in chlorine test kits but can be affected by interfering substances like iron, manganese, and nitrites. How it works:
  1. 1. Reaction:o-Tolidine reacts with free chlorine (active chlorine) in water to produce a distinct yellow or greenish-yellow color.
  2. 2. Intensity:The darkness or intensity of the color developed is directly proportional to the amount of chlorine present.
  3. 3. Estimation:By comparing the color intensity with known standards, you can estimate the concentration of chlorine.
Applications:
  • Potable Water: Used to test for residual chlorine in drinking water, ensuring proper disinfection.
  • Swimming Pool Water: Detects free chlorine levels to maintain sanitation.
  • Condenser Water: Monitors chlorine in industrial water systems.
Considerations:
  • Interfering Substances:The presence of substances like iron, manganese, and nitrites can affect the accuracy of the test.
  • Light Sensitivity:The test should be conducted in the dark for optimal color development and to avoid interference from sunlight.
  • Usage:The reagent is often used in small packing sizes for industry servicing, industrial quality control laboratories, and academic/research institutions.
