Oxadiazon is a selective, pre-emergent and early post-emergent contact herbicide used to control various annual broad-leaved weeds and grasses in non-food and some food crops, such as rice, soybeans, citrus, and turf, as well as ornamental plants and landscapes. It works by inhibiting a specific enzyme in the weed's chlorophyll production pathway, preventing weed growth. It is an oxadiazole-class herbicide that acts as a contact poison. What it is:
- Selective Herbicide: Oxadiazon targets certain types of weeds while leaving desirable plants less affected.
- Pre-emergent and Post-emergent: It can be applied before weeds emerge from the soil to prevent them from germinating or applied after they have started to grow, but still very early in their development.
- Contact Herbicide: It works by direct contact with the weed.
How it works (Mechanism):
- Oxadiazon inhibits an enzyme called protoporphyrinogen oxidase, which is crucial for the synthesis of chlorophyll in plants.
- This inhibition disrupts the chlorophyll production pathway, ultimately leading to the death of susceptible weeds.
Uses:
- Weed Control:It is effective against both monocotyledonous (grasses, sedges) and dicotyledonous (broad-leaved) weeds.
- Crops and Plants:Used on turf, ornamental trees, shrubs, and vines, and in certain agricultural crops like rice, soybeans, cotton, and citrus.
- Non-food Situations:Also applied in non-cropped areas, including playgrounds, roadsides, and cemeteries.
Key Characteristics:
- Chemical Name: 5-(tert-Butyl)-3-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one.
- Classification: It belongs to the oxadiazole class of herbicides.
Toxicity:
- Acute exposure to oxadiazon can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
- Long-term studies in animals have shown effects on the liver
